A cleanroom is a space in which the concentration of airborne particles is regulated and classified. A cleanroom is designed to minimise the introduction, generation and retention of particles in the space. Reference: International standard ISO14644-1 first edition 2015.
Here you will find more information about the ISO cleanroom standards.
Laminar flow is a controlled flow of air, wherein the entire air volume within a given space moves with a uniform speed in a single parallel direction. The proper term for this air flow is unidirectional flow. The unidirectional flow can be horizontal (crossflow) or vertical (downflow). Both techniques are used in cleanrooms and flow cabinets by ProCleanroom.
The ErP directive is European legislation on ‘Energy Related Products’. To achieve the objectives of the European climate treaty, a set of guidelines has been introduced which will be amended every year. The guidelines contain rules for electric motors used in fans and thus also apply to the fans in the filter of a cleanroom. The goal is to increase efficiency of the motors with 20% by 2020. This includes all fans with a capacity between 125 W and 500 kW, sold in Europe.
The fan filter units by ProCleanroom are fitted with the latest DC fan motors. The fan motors come from German quality manufacturer EBM Papst. ProCleanroom is thus far ahead of the stringent ErP guidelines. The cleanrooms and flow cabinets by ProCleanroom consume up to 70% less energy than the previous generation of fans with AC motor, which guarantees the lowest operating costs and cost of ownership.
The typical lifespan of a HEPA or ULPA filter varies between 3 and 5 years, depending on the degree of contamination in the environment and maintenance of the pre-filters. The capacity of the fan filter unit (HEPA or ULPA filter) decreases over time as the filter media is saturated and static pressure increases. This way, the efficiency (and thus the filter performance) of the filter even increases. As soon as the recommended speed of 0.45 m/s at the filter surface cannot be realised anymore, replacement of the filter is required. This process is monitored by a differential pressure gauge, keeping you up to date.
The service interval for the pre-filter of the cleanroom is 3 to 6 months. In an extremely dirty environment, it may be necessary to clean or replace it monthly. If the modular cleanroom is placed in an existing cleanroom, the service interval is longer (up to 12 months).
The ISO14644-1 has no requirements for temperature control in cleanrooms. However, air conditioning offers comfort to the operators and climate control optimally supports temperature-sensitive processes.
Immediately following the installation, an extensive cleanroom validation report is prepared, containing the certain variables such as; particle counting, flow velocity, flow rate determination, sound pressure levels and lux levels (brightness). This report is in line with the ISO14644-1 standard and satisfies the requirements of customer audits.
The cleanroom standard ISO14644-1 refers only to the basic particle sizes and so a differential pressure is not necessary. Air always moves from a place with a higher pressure to a place with a lower pressure. To prevent the introduction of polluted air, clean air should move from the cleanest place to the place that is least clean. A differential pressure may be an indicator for the operation of a cleanroom. Sufficient air changes, and a positive outgoing air stream is necessary in order to remove particles from the space.
To order spare parts you can contact ProCleanroom. Give us the serial number of the part through telephone or mail, and ProCleanroom handles the delivery of the spare part.
The ISO14644-1 guidelines recommend a periodic inspection and validation for each cleanroom or flow cabinet. ProCleanroom completes the installation of your cleanroom with an ISO-validation and validation report. The service interval of the cleanroom is dependent on the ISO class of the cleanroom and your specific process (3-12 months). Many customers enter a service contract with ProCleanroom for timely maintenance and validation of the cleanroom. Want to know more? Contact us.

The contamination level is significantly reduced in a cleanroom. However, the cleanroom must be cleaned periodically because it is inevitable that processes, operators and/or machines introduce particles. Each cleanroom needs a cleaning protocol. After the installation you will receive a documentation package by ProCleanroom, containing an advisory cleaning protocol for the cleanroom.
